Ogallala, NE to North Platte, NE

Woke up at 4:45 and was going to get an early start. Got the bikes out of the Motel room and I noticed my back tire was flat.  Pulled the wheel out of the frame and went back into the Motel room. Pulled the tube out and found the leak, one of the truck tire wire Parker patches was no longer holding. Replaced the tube with a new one and pumped it up with one of the 16 oz CO2 cartriges the I purchased at the Laramie bike store.
Had breakfast at McDonald’s for Dan’s sake, he was going through withdrawal. We started to bike by 6:15.
The corn in this area of Nebraska is doing great, chest high.
At Paxton the road was closed, we proceded and found that the road construction crew was OK with us proceeding. It was great biking since we had no traffic. About half way between Paxton and Sutherland along the side of the road. We found that they are talking across America, having started in Virgina and plan on ending in San Fransico, CA. We compared approaches, they did up to 30 miles a day, we both stayed at places overnight. We provided suggestions on going through Wyoming.
At Hershey we stopped at a Bar and Grill in town. We both had a cheeseburger, I had a Bud Light Lime, Dan had a screwdriver. Good stop.
We finished biking to North Platte, found the Fairfield Inn and Dan was able to talk them into the employee rate. Biked back towards downtown to the bike store, I picked up a couple tubes, CO2 and rear break pads.
Did a total of 56.31 miles at an average of 12.6, we had a head wind all day, felt like we were going up hill all day.
Took a warm shower, feal clean and did laundry.

  1. He meant to say that about half way between Paxton and Sutherland they met a young couple who are “walking” across America (although I’m sure they are talking too). They started in “Virginia”. They expect it to take 8 months.
