The good news is that my leggs did not have the pain from previous mornings. The day of rest did the trick.
What a day, wet and cold. Had breakfast at the Fairfield at 6, on the bikes by 6:30. After getting through town we rode on I80 which was up hill for ~5 miles. Stopped for a couple on minutes at each mile marker. Fog turned into drizzle which at the summit turned into rain. Started with a temp of 46 and expected the sun to burn the clouds off and warm up, never happened. At the summit the temp went into the low 40’s, that along with the rain all the way down into Cheyenne made it very difficult to stay warm. The summit was about 12 miles out, we stopped at the visitor center to get out of the rain, use the restroom and ask some questions.
Rain increased, very cold, I found the my Novara jacket and Novara Rainy Pass long gloves are NOT waterproof, had to put on my Frog rain top over everthing. Biked until 30 miles out and saw a maintenance facility, we stopped for a half hour to warm up, drank coffee and ate a Clif bar. The guys indicated that 8 miles down the road was the ‘Bunkhouse Bar & Grill’ and that they would be open. It was mostly down hill, had to keep petaling all of the time to stay warm, braking to keep the speed down to not cool off.
We had lunch at the Bunkhouse, BLT’s, I had coffee, Dan had tea. We were in no hurry to leave. A total of 57.75 miles (avg 9.7) today to the Fairfield Inn. Hope that the shoes and socks dry out tonight.
