Total of 66.81 which I think is the longest distance we have done UN a day. Started 5:30 which is the earliest we have started biking. The first 26 miles included 3 hills called the Three Sisters. Just after peaking the last sister Dan hit something with the front wheel, flat tire (9:10am). He replaced both the tire and the tube. At mile 47 (10:30am) Dan’s rear tire went flat, found the truck wire, installed a new tube.
We arrived at Little America at 12:45, on the exit ramp Dan told me that my BOB tire was flat. I pulled it appart and found a truck wire while Dan checked us in to the Little America Hotel. Using the sink in the room I was able to find the hole in the tube and patched it.
Had a cheeseburger and the $.50 icecream cone that they had been advertising for miles before the exit.
We are now into the biking that I like, what Dan calls mindless biking. Dan is now taking the lead because I can easly keep up with him on the downhills and long flat terrain.
We had clouds on and off all day. Soon after getting in it started to sprinkle / rain.
It appears that we are over the half way point. Google maps indicates we have 835 miles to go, 24 days till RAGBRAI, we need to average 35 miles per day. I think we are going to make it.

  1. Saw your blog on Alan Rindels’ facebook page. Maybe you remember me from Calvary CRC in Bloomington/Edina. Your mom came to pick raspberries at my patch this past Monday.

Anyhow, your trip looks like a wonderful adventure and to do with your brother is a bonus. I took a summer off from work once too and spent it travelling and volunteering in the West…I’ll always be glad I made the decision to take my trip.

  2. You’re over the hump!!
I’m stillin awe that you guys not only took on this challenge, but you’re smoking right on through it, flat tires and all! Seems you certainly hadthe logisitics elements of tis adventure pretty well planned…for an engineer that is 🙂
